From One Coast To Another
Francesco Bruno was born in Corigliano Calabria Italy in 1859. He came to America in 1892 to start a new life and have a better opportunity for his family. He was one of the first Italians to settle in Westerly R.I. and opened a fruit / grocery store in the early 1900's on Pleasant Street where the family lived. Later his son, Rico Francesco Bruno specialized in fresh meats and instantly became a local trademark - Bruno's Meat Market was born. In 1960 Rico passed away and his son Frank Anthony Bruno took over the business. Frank's daughter and son in law, Palma and Medoro Trombino took over the business in 1978 at the present location on Springbrook Road. They changed the name from Bruno's Meat Market to Westerly Packing Company and not only specialized in walk-in customers but added a wholesale division to the Company. Today with the help of their two sons Medoro II and Bruno (named after his mother's family) they have developed the small in-house store into a thriving business specializing in many categories of the food industry.
